|C. R. Bard, a global supplier of silicone-based medical devices, wanted to significantly increase its capacity by building an additional plant in Juarez, Mexico. DME’s team, which included JacobsWyper Architects, provided the programming, building design, and equipment arrangements, as well as the conveyer layout and integration with custom equipment. All of this was incorporated into a Basis of Design package for the greenfield facility. A local design-build firm in Mexico implemented DME’s design work.
One critical challenge, which required the expertise of DME, was mapping the current manufacturing process to the new facility. Complicating the project scope was the need for customized process documentation for the plant’s non-standard equipment. DME started its engagement by sending a team to the original plant to reconstruct the process. In doing so, they quickly gained the trust of C. R. Bard’s employees and were able to create process flow diagrams, material balances, and equipment schematics—all to be incorporated into the new facility design.
